Re-Inventing Romeo & Juliet, Roller Coasters and Revolutions
There were two parts to this project. The first part was “Reinventing Romeo and Juliet.” For this part, we had to reinvent Romeo & Juliet as if it took place during a world conflict of our choice. For my group, we chose The Korean War. Each group member had to make a “product” in order to make Romeo & Juliet come to life during The Korean War. My product was to make a light collage of what kinds of lights would be in place for 5 different scenes of the play. We had to make sure that every design choice we made for our product was historically and culturally accurate to our world conflict.
To prove this, we had to make 5 design paragraphs explaining 5 design choices we made in our product. It had to connect to Romeo and Juliet as well as the culture of Korea and The Korean War itself. At the end of the project, each team presented each of their products to a group of real actors and playwrights explaining why having Romeo and Juliet be set in their specific world conflict would be a good idea. This was the Humanities portion of the project. |
The other portion was “Roller Coasters and Revolutions.” For this part, each group had to make one 18”x 18” module that is a section of a giant mini roller coaster. At the end, every group’s module will connect, creating a self-repeating roller coaster. For each module, there is a track that connects to the other modules around it, artwork, a platform, and a sign with the name of the group’s world conflict, each of which had to look presentable and creative. Building the module was the Engineering part of the project. For the physics portion, we learned how to calculate different energies, specifically the energies of our roller coaster, which is Kinetic and Potential energy.
I think my ¨outstanding moment¨ was when I did my design pitch. We were the first group to go, so we didn't have any time to practice right before hand. This makes me even more proud of myself for doing a great job in the design pitch. I was very strong and persuasive, and I worked really hard on writing the script for it. I practiced it a lot and when we asked questions I was always up and ready to answer them. I didn't talk quiet or dull, but full of passion. |
Although I feel like I did a great job during my portion of the design pitch, I feel like us as a group could have been a bit more quick. We got a little carried away when answering questions from the audience. I also feel like I could have had a better explanation of The Korean War at exhibition because my partner Andrew had to explain it for me most of the time. But overall, I am proud of what I accomplished, and this project was definitely something to remember. I am thankful I had such a great group to do it with.
